Government Backs Innovation to Boost Engineered Timber Use
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has announced a new collaboration aimed at accelerating the use of engineered timber in New Zealand’s commercial and industrial buildings. At the time of writing, MPI has partnered with Christchurch-based startup Nezo to support the Mid-Rise Wood Construction (MRWC) programme, an initiative designed to encourage greater adoption of timber-based construction methods nationwide.
A New Digital Tool to Transform Building Design
As part of the programme, MPI and engineered timber producer Red Stag are introducing a free digital modelling tool that will allow architects, engineers, and developers to calculate the cost, structural weight, and carbon footprint of buildings made from cross-laminated timber (CLT). This tool aims to simplify early design decisions, particularly in an industry where traditional materials like steel and concrete have long been the default. By making environmental and cost comparisons more transparent, officials hope to reduce barriers for builders who are unsure about switching to engineered timber.
Why Engineered Timber Matters Now
Engineered timber has gained global momentum for its lower emissions profile, lighter weight, and faster installation times. MPI believes that widespread adoption could significantly reduce carbon outputs in the construction sector—one of New Zealand’s largest emitters.
For startups like Nezo, the partnership offers the opportunity to scale technology that makes timber more accessible and commercially viable.
A Push Toward a Low-Carbon Future
Government officials say the MRWC programme could become a blueprint for future public–private collaborations in sustainable building. With rising demand for greener construction, the initiative positions New Zealand to lead the shift toward innovative timber solutions.
At the time of writing, industry groups have welcomed the move, expecting the new tool to accelerate investment in climate-friendly building materials.
