Government Mandates Wool Use in Public Buildings from July

Apr 09, 2025

New Zealand’s Government has officially directed all government agencies to use wool fibre products in the construction and refurbishment of public buildings, starting July 1. This policy move fulfils a coalition agreement promise between the National Party and NZ First. Announced by Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis and Wool Minister Mark Patterson, the directive requires the use of wool “where practical and appropriate,” with a focus on promoting local industry and sustainable building practices. The initiative applies to new government building projects as well as renovations and will support the struggling wool sector by increasing demand. While the government has yet to clarify the full implementation framework, the announcement marks a significant shift toward supporting natural fibres in public procurement. Industry groups have welcomed the decision, seeing it as a step towards revitalising New Zealand’s wool industry and reducing reliance on synthetic alternatives.
