Halo Agtech Targets Methane Cuts with Wearable Tech for Cattle

Halo Agtech Ltd, a New Zealand startup trading as 28tozero, is developing a wearable device for cattle designed to neutralize methane emissions directly as animals exhale. The name 28tozero reflects the fact that methane is 28 times more harmful than carbon dioxide in terms of its global warming potential. Executive chair Peter Barrowclough says the goal is to help New Zealand meet its climate targets—cutting biogenic methane emissions by 10% below 2017 levels by 2030, and by 24–47% by 2050. The company aims to create a practical solution that aligns with the country's environmental goals and agricultural practices. While the idea of animals wearing such technology presents challenges, Halo Agtech is optimistic about farmer uptake and the potential for real-time methane mitigation through innovation.
