Hammond points out that New Zealand has world-class dairy infrastructure, excellent genetics, and strong farming expertise, making it well-positioned to lead in the sheep milk industry. However, the country’s dairy sheep population remains limited, creating a disconnect between its agricultural potential and current output. Hammond suggests that with rising demand for alternative dairy products and New Zealand’s well-established international trade relationships, there’s a major opportunity to scale up this niche sector. He envisions significant growth if industry players can collaborate and invest in expanding the sheep milk supply chain.
