Port of Tauranga Hikes Rail Fees Amid Rising Costs

Jul 04, 2025

Port of Tauranga Limited (NZX: POT), New Zealand’s largest port operator, has announced a substantial increase in the cost of rail container transport to MetroPort in Auckland. The port will more than double current charges by introducing a $135 per container site-access and vehicle-booking system (VBS) fee starting September 1. This move comes in response to increased charges from KiwiRail, with a separate rail recovery fee now being billed directly to shipping lines. In a customer advisory issued on July 1, the company acknowledged the significant impact on users but emphasized the need to recover unsustainable cost pressures. Port of Tauranga noted that its current rail tariff does not adequately reflect the true cost of the service. At the time of writing, the company has not detailed the exact amount of the new rail recovery fee but confirmed it will take effect alongside the new VBS charge.
