Trial on NZ Convention Centre Fire Moves Forward Despite Adjournment Request

The Fletcher Construction Company (FCC), a subsidiary of Fletcher Building Limited (NZX: FBU), is moving ahead with a lawsuit against two waterproofing companies over the 2019 New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) fire in Auckland. FCC, contracted by SkyCity Entertainment in 2015 to design and construct the convention center, has attributed the fire's cause to these subcontractors. The blaze, which severely damaged the NZICC, became a substantial liability for Fletcher Building, impacting its leadership with the loss of both its CEO and chair. Efforts by the waterproofing companies to delay the trial set for June next year have been unsuccessful, allowing Fletcher to press forward with claims related to the high-profile incident. At the time of writing, the case remains a significant point of accountability within New Zealand’s construction sector.
